A Geek Wedding

image

Conventional weddings are all well and good but sometimes you just need to break with tradition and go for something… well, a bit unconventional - and you can’t get anymore unconventional than a geek wedding.

That’s not a typographical error. You may consider the smashing of plates and glasses to be “unconventional” but we’re not talking about greek weddings, we’re talking about geek weddings. Geek.

There are several definitions of the word “geek” including… unfashionable, socially inept, or a knowledgable and obsessive enthusiast. The first two seem a little unfair, so when we talk about a “geek wedding” we’re referring to two knowledgable and obsessive enthusiasts joining together in holy matrimony.

The word “obsessive” may sound a tad derogatory, but when two people get married dressed as characters from Shrek then they’ve certainly crossed the threshold of just being a “fan” of the movies. The word fan is itself an abbreviation of “fanatic” so to go to the trouble of painting yourself green to look like an ogre certainly makes you more than just a couple of “appreciators” who’ve maybe seen the film a few times and own the DVD. It makes them hardcore fans. Obsessive enthusiasts. Geeks.

Maybe you’re an obsessive enthusiast of the Smurfs and not only do you want to dress as two Smurfs when you get married, but you insist that all your guests do the same. If you really want to go the whole nine yards you could incorporate the word “Smurf” into your wedding vows on multiple occasions. As Smurf language is basically the same as English, but with the word “smurf” substituted for whatever noun, verb, adjective, or adverb is being used.

That may be taking things a tad too far, but it would seem a trifle odd if the bride and groom are dressed up as cartoon characters while the congregation are decked out in formal attire. So if you love the idea of dressing up as your favourite fictional characters… do spare a thought for the guests and who might have “other plans” that day if you announce it’s a fancy dress or cosplay wedding.

You may decide to go for a Harry Potter themed wedding, with your guests dressed as students from Hogwarts, or perhaps a Star Wars themed wedding with an army of Stormtroopers. Although the latter may prove problematic with regard to your budget, and convincing people to dress in full body armour, wielding blasters. Perhaps dressing as generic Jedi knights in robes akin to Obi-Wan-Kenobi would be a more cost effective (and dare we say “sensible”) approach.

It’s great if you want to embrace your inner geek and reflect the things you’re most passionate about at your wedding. You can either unashamedly go all the way, or just have subtle “touches” like the theme tune of your favourite TV show playing as you walk down the aisle.

Before you decide to incorporate your favourite work of fiction into the biggest day of your life you may wish to consider one thing… your wedding photos are going to outlive you.

Yes, your children and your children’s children are going to be looking at those photos for generations to come. Even in just 10 years you might look back at them and think “Why?” and later when your children ask if they can peruse your wedding photos you come up with some elaborate yarn about how they were all destroyed in a fire.

“Even the copies you posted online?”

Yes, them too.

“Have you called the photographer? He must have copies!”

“Just drop it. Okay?”

Comic book weddings

image

Weddings have played a huge role in popular culture over the years, and they change the public’s opinion and thoughts as to how a wedding should be conducted. From royal weddings like Charles and Diana, to celebrity couplings like David and Victoria Beckham, or fictional on-screen weddings such as Matthew and Mary in Downton Abbey, they always pull in the viewers - or readers of the glossy magazines that cover the aforementioned nuptials.

One avenue that often gets overlooked is weddings in comic books, namely superhero weddings - and there have been a plethora of Marvel and DC characters tying the knot over the years. Both Spider-Man and Superman have married their true loves (albeit as their alter egos, Peter Parker and Clark Kent respectively) while Reed Richards and Susan Storm of the Fantastic Four will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2015. Mr Fantastic is clearly in this for the long stretch.

Bruce Wayne may be seen as a billionaire playboy, but aside from being romantically involved with Catwoman, his alter-ego Batman has never flapped down the aisle. Well, after spending the best part of 70 years running around with a boy in tights… a lot of would-be suitors may have just assumed he was off-the-shelf.

Listing every wedding that has taken place in comics history would be a mean feat, and the validity of some of them would be drawn into question. The trouble with the superhero universe is that it’s hard to have a wedding that passes without incident, while many titles have been “rebooted” over the years, meaning that the original wedding now doesn’t count, didn’t happen, was retconned out of existence or took place in an alternate universe.

Here’s just a few notable mentions of weddings in the Marvel/DC comic book universe over the years…

Spider-Man and Mary-Jane Watson

image

In 1987, after one of the most turbulent romances in comics history, Peter Parker, alter ego of the Amazing Spider-Man, finally married his lifelong love Mary-Jane Watson. Sadly, after 20 years of wedded bliss The Powers That Be (namely Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada) decided that the character of Peter Parker worked better as a single man, so the marriage had to come to an end. Except they couldn’t just fall out of love and file for divorce… so when his Aunt May is shot, Spider-Man encounters the demon Mephisto, who offers to save her life if he sacrifices his marriage to Mary-Jane. So instead of saying “Well, Aunt May’s had a good innings” Peter and Mary-Jane both agree to the demon’s terms. Mephisto then erases this part of their history so, effectively, their marriage never happened.

The storyline and its conclusion weren’t exactly embraced by the fans, and to this day many of them are still up in arms about the whole thing. On reflection getting the spawn of Satan involved probably wasn’t such a great idea.

Mephisto could probably make a fortune in that business though.

“Instead of getting a divorce why don’t we get that demon guy to erase our marriage from history, so that it never happened?”

“Works for me, dear”

Superman and Lois Lane

After almost 60 years of flapping around and dealing with his commitment issues, Superman finally married Lois Lane in 1996. Previous “weddings” had all been hoaxes, dreams or imaginary tales, but this one seems to be for keeps, and the couple celebrate their 18th anniversary this year.

Thankfully Mephisto doesn’t inhabit the DC Comics universe.

Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman

Fifty years of marriage is impressive for any couple, but in the Marvel Comics universe (which is inhabited by history erasing demons) that’s a remarkable achievement. Of course Reed Richards and Susan Storm haven’t been without their troubles… Doctor Doom, The Beyonder, Ego the Living Planet, Frightful Four, Galactus, Mole Man, Molecule Man, Psycho-Man, Skrulls, Super-Skrull… to name but a few hundred… but they’ve survived.

As WedMeDo specialise in Flash wedding websites it would be amiss of us not to include DC Comics’ The Flash…

The Flash and Iris West

image

Back in 1966 Barry Allen (aka The Flash) wed Iris West in a ceremony that proved to be eventful when proceedings were halted by… The Flash!

Wait, what?

Yes, it turned out that The Flash’s arch nemesis Professor Zoom had travelled back in time and swapped minds with Barry Allen at the altar. After a rather perplexing bout of time travelling and ring swapping (The Flash & Zoom costumes are both contained in rings when they’re not being worn), Barry defeats the evil Zoom and is free to marry Miss West. Hooray!

Sadly this marriage didn’t survive a DC Comics “reboot” therefore making this conjugal bond a flash in the pan.

Sorry.

The Incredible Hulk and Betty Ross

image

Okay, so The Hulk didn’t actually get married. That would be asking for trouble…

“Do you, er… Hulk… take this….”

“HULK SMASH!”

Bruce Banner (who transforms into The Hulk when he gets really mad about something) married Betty Ross back in 1986.

To be fair The Hulk kept out of mischief for the wedding, but “Thunderbolt Ross” (the father of the bride who probably didn’t give the marriage his blessing) does burst in with a gun and tries to shoot Bruce Banner. Thankfully Rick Jones (the Best Man) takes a bullet in the gut so that the wedding can proceed. Now there’s a shining example of Best Man responsibilities.

To describe their marriage as a “roller-coaster” would be putting things mildly…

Betty’s constant exposure to The Hulk gave her gamma sickness, with poisoning so acute that she nearly died. Although Banner was able to invent a cure using his own blood, The Hulk's nemesis The Abomination swapped his blood sample with his own blood before the transfusion. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this worsened Betty’s condition, causing her to die from the radiation.

Betty’s body was put into cryogenic stasis by her father (the gun wielding maniac who tried to kill her husband) and she was later revived by a green skinned psycho with an exceptionally large forehead who called himself The Leader… oh, and M.O.D.O.K (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) who subjected Betty to a disturbing process that transformed her into The Red She-Hulk.

You think your marriage has its ups-and-downs?

And here’s one that didn’t happen…
